In high performing schools, teachers are open to new learnings and rethink their approaches to teaching and assessment practices based on teacher-directed action research and other classroom based inquiries. Decisions about programs are based on evaluation and data analysis, not political considerations; hence, you can see real continuity from one program to another.
Discussion Questions
- Are teachers and other school employees encouraged to consider and experiment with different teaching or work strategies and collect and analyze data for making instructional and program decisions?
- Does the staff have the knowledge and skills to conduct action research or other school or classroom based inquiries?
- Is data based decision making valued in your school?
Activity
- In an open staff meeting, determine how the school uses data-based decision making, if at all. Determine what improvements or professional development are needed to encourage all staff to conduct action research.
