Research conducted at school influences programs and instruction.

In high performing schools, teachers are open to new learnings and rethink their approaches to teaching and assessment practices based on teacher-directed action research and other classroom based inquiries. Decisions about programs are based on evaluation and data analysis, not political considerations; hence, you can see real continuity from one program to another.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. Are teachers and other school employees encouraged to consider and experiment with different teaching or work strategies and collect and analyze data for making instructional and program decisions?

  2. Does the staff have the knowledge and skills to conduct action research or other school or classroom based inquiries?

  3. Is data based decision making valued in your school?

ACTIVITY
  • In an open staff meeting, determine how the school uses data-based decision making, if at all. Determine what improvements or professional development are needed to encourage all staff to conduct action research.
