KEY 6 - INDICATOR 5
Instruction includes interventions for students
who are not succeeding.
This indicator documents what teachers believe about their students’
learning and how they teach to that belief.
See the background information on the relationship
between content standards and curriculum to ensure learning for the
21st century at the end of this section.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- What perceptions do members of your school community hold regarding
the ability of all students to learn what is expected?
- What are the perceptions among teachers who teach at the same grade
level or subject area?
- What is the understanding about using different teaching strategies
in the same class to improve student achievement?
- What supports and opportunities are available to students who are
not meeting expected academic outcomes?
- What supports are available to teachers who have students who are
not progressing academically?
- Examine whether or not members of the school staff assume individual
and collective responsibility for helping underachieving students’
progress.
ACTIVITIES
- In teams, review your set of content standards and be sure that
the curriculum aligns with them. Share findings with the entire
staff.
- Survey your school community to determine the understanding among
the school community about what should be done when students are
not performing at the expected academic level. Review expectations
and compare expectations with reality. Decide whether or not changes
would make a difference.
Note: If you find that there are members of your school community
who do not believe that all students can learn, address the issue.
Use a variation of this statement: “All students have equal access
to all aspects of the curriculum with no disadvantage because of
race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, or gender."This
does not, however, ensure that all students will learn at the same
rate, at the same age, or at the same time.
