KEY 6 - INDICATOR 1
Curriculum includes “learning how to learn"activities.

Students not only need to acquire knowledge and develop skills. They also need to reflect on their learning processes. This ability enables them to determine the strategies that will best enable them to master subject content.

This indicator identifies the “learning-how-to-learn"activities used in your school.

Background information on how students learn can be found at the end of this section.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. Examine the staff’s perceptions about learning how to learn.

  2. How varied are the activities that promote learning how to learn among teachers working at the same grade level and teaching the same subject?

ACTIVITIES
  • As a school team, identify the differences in understandings about learning how to learn. Discuss the impact that they have on instructional strategies and assessing student performance (see Key 3). Discuss the advantages of a shared understanding and work toward that goal.

  • Identify learning-how-to-learn activities that teachers use. Have teachers describe their methods, and discuss their effectiveness with the goal of reaching a shared understanding.
