KEY 4 - INDICATOR 4
Classroom observations and constructive feedback from teachers and principal are included in professional development.

Observation and feedback are critical elements of successful development within a school community. This indicator examines the frequency and usefulness of staff feedback. This is a follow-up to a discussion in KEY 2.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. How willing are teachers, school and central administrators, education support professionals, and parents to provide and receive feedback as part of a professional development process?

  2. What changes are needed to develop a meaningful feedback system?

ACTIVITY
  • In a team that includes the school principal or staff mentor, teachers, and education support professionals —all selected by peers— observe team members working with students. You may want to observe a team member who is working with students on a lesson that is directly related to a school improvement goal. Offer each other both supportive and descriptive feedback. Offer peer coaching to anyone who needs additional support.
