KEY 4- Personal and Professional Learning
Indicators
1.
Professional development has a direct, positive effect on teaching.
2.
School administrators and staff work together to provide relevant professional development experiences.
3.
Teachers are prepared to use state or district curriculum assessment or performance standards.
4.
Classroom observations and constructive feedback from teachers and principal are included in professional development.
5.
Teachers are prepared to address the needs of students with diverse learning needs and backgrounds.
6.
Teachers have regularly scheduled time to learn from one another.
7.
Staff development opportunities are pursued through organized professional development activities within and outside the school.
8.
Staff development is provided in the areas of decision making and problem solving.
9.
Staff development is consistent, comprehensive, and related to practices in the school.
10.
Opportunities are available for mentoring.
11.
Teachers have strong knowledge of their subject matter areas.

This section is designed to offer school improvement teams a deeper understanding of the importance of personal and professional development and how it is linked to continuous improvement. It encourages school staff to embrace a “radical rethinking"of professional development and to accept that people learn best through active participation.

After completing the work in this section, participants will begin to:

  1. Understand the KEYS indicators related to personal and professional development.

  2. Identify the barriers to professional development.

  3. Create action steps for overcoming the barriers and finding ways to enhance professional development efforts.

  4. Obtain a clearer understanding of the effective use of available resources.
