ASSESSMENT RESULTS HAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.

There are some common problems associated with assessment results. One is the use of a single test score to to make high-stakes decisions — which teachers get bonuses or other rewards, where to place students in specific programs, whether to promote or retain students, or what recommendations to make on students’ post high school career preparation. This indicator examines these issues.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. How does the school use assessment results to make decisions?

  2. If the data is not sufficient to make critical decisions, how can the staff add more data?

  3. What methods does the school use to report data to parents? How can the school improve the methods?

ACTIVITY
  • Survey teachers, students, and parents on their opinions of the fairness of the school’s grading and reporting practices. Discuss the usefulness of the practices to school staff, students, parents, and the public in understanding how well students are achieving learning goals. Develop a plan for communicating assessment results to parents and analyzing the data with them.
