 Indicators 123456789
KEY 2 - INDICATOR 8
Parents, community, and staff other than teachers are involved in decisions about school goals.

This indicator measures the level of business and community participation in the school. It also addresses parent involvement and possible changes in current practices to ensure a participatory process for all stakeholders.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. How much do parents and other community stakeholders know about how decisions are made in your school?

  2. What would be the likely response of most school staff to a participatory decision making process that included parents and community stakeholders?

  3. Discuss ways to better involve parents, community, and business.

ACTIVITIES
  • Arrange for the school staff to view School Stories, a series of 30-minute television programs produced by NEA and “The Learning Channel,” about connecting schools and their communities, available from the NEA Professional Library. Use the show, along with the above questions, as a discussion starter on ways you can increase business and community participation in schools.

  • Assign a small team to review A Pocket Guide to Building Partnerships for Student Learning (see the resources at the end of this section). The guide includes suggestions for schools and local associations on promoting better community relations. Have the team make suggestions for your school based on information from the guide. Develop a plan for implementation.
