KEY 1 - SHARED UNDERSTANDING AND COMMITMENT TO HIGH GOALS
Indicators
1. Shared goals for achievable education outcomes are clear and explicit.
2. Teachers, administrators and other school employees take responsibility for the achievement of challenging standards for all students.
3. Curriculum is student-centered.
4. School operates under the assumption that all students can learn.
5. School distict administrators support staff efforts and monitor progress toward achievement of goals.

This section is designed to help all stakeholders in a school community analyze and assess the degree of shared understanding and commitment to high levels of student outcomes. The purpose is also to help determine whether the school’s intellectual goals are clear and specific. To accomplish this task, everyone must be engaged in the visioning and goalsetting processes.

After completing the exercises in this section, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the KEYS indicators related to shared understanding and commitment to high goals.
  2. Interpret and apply data as they relate to Key 1.
  3. Develop a common language for the school’s vision and goals on student achievement.
  4. Create a climate of shared understanding and commitment to high goals.

The survey data indicate that your school community needs to improve in one or more of the indicators in Key 1. What follows are activities and processes to help you with your work. Use the following five questions, which represent stages of the school improvement process, as a backdrop:

  1. Where are we now?
  2. Where do we want to go?
  3. How will we get there?
  4. How will we know we are getting there?
  5. How will we sustain the focus and momentum?
