APPENDIX 2 - MORE ON THE VISION THING
CREATING A VISION

Visions are a reflection of values. Visions paint a picture that represents, in concrete images, how we plan to live out our meaning and purpose — the unique contribution we have to offer — in the workplace. Thus, to create a vision, we must begin by identifying core values (near and dear to us) and then translating those values into images that have to do with how we will work — that is, how we will deal with issues that have to do with coming together in organizations for the purpose of providing products and services.

Use the following questions to trigger images for your vision:

How will we treat customers, both internal and external?

How will they influence decision making?
How will we deal with their dissatisfaction?
How do we want them to describe us when talking to others?
How will we get feedback from them?
How will we let them know we value them?

How will we treat each other as co-workers?

What will the experience of working in this unit be like?
What kind of norms will characterize the way we interact?
How will conflict and dissent be handled?
How will contributions be recognized?
What kind of behavior will be rewarded?

How will we structure the organization?

What kinds of products and services will we offer?
How will we differentiate our organization from others that do the same kind of work?
What kinds of people will play key roles? What kinds of opportunities will be provided for employees?
How will issues like honest, feedback information flow, status, dependency, etc., be managed?
