ABOUT THE KEYS ACTION GUIDE

Your school community is about to embark on a school improvement journey that will aid not only the students enrolled today, but also those who will follow. With the help of this guide, your KEYS survey results, and other resources, you will find opportunities to explore, discuss, act, improve, and reflect on conditions of teaching and learning in your school. Following are a few things to keep in mind as you begin your work:

  • As a school community team, review your survey results. An example of KEYS data analysis and how to interpret it is in the Appendices. Select the indicators in each section that most merit your attention. Review the survey data specific to each indicator as you work in that area. Consider possible reasons for your survey results.
  • A section found in the Appendices, Basic Skills for Facilitating School Change, offers several methods for leading your KEYS journey. Determine which suggested actions are appropriate for your school’s needs.
  • Each section includes a series of discussion questions. You may want to use the questions as you begin working on the activities that follow.

As you browse the guide, you may feel that the work is overwhelming. A closer look at the suggested activities, however, could reveal that you or other stakeholders in the school are already engaged in such efforts. What the guide can help you accomplish is your working as a team for a specific purpose. And remember, members of the NEA staff are available to help you. For answers to your questions or more information about KEYS, call the NEA School System Capacity Department at (202) 822-7350. You may also access information about KEYS from the NEA web site: www.nea.org.
